South African president says cheaper internet access for all!

South Africa has always been on the forefront of everything exciting in the African web scene. Now the president of South Africa, Mr. Thabo Mbeki, is taking it a bit further. He announced at his state of the union address that Sentech a state-owned broadband supplier, will become a wireless internet provider. This was after it was further funded, funded loads of funds.
This as everyone knows will reduce the cost and hassle of doing business in Africa, which has the highest costs for internet access and related stuff in the world. This is good news which will go well with the future launch of the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) – a 9 9000km-long submarine cable connecting Duran and Port Sudan.
Something being anticipated in places like Kenya, were broadband costs are high and internet access is slow. This likely will make internet access more accessible to more people, allowing greater rooms for local businesses.
Back to South Africa, Thabo Mbeki said
“Already, money has been allocated for Sentech to become a wireless internet wholesaler as well as finance its digitisation,”
A small step for South Africa, a leap for the world.
